Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings kicks off Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program

MAYOR’S INTERN FELLOWS PROGRAM THURSDAY (MARCH 21) AT 10 A.M. AT DALLAS CITY HALL

Mayor Rawlings to deliver call to action, asking business community to “dig deep and invest in our youth” by providing summer internships for Dallas public high school students.

Imagine being 17 and given the opportunity to spend a summer working in coveted positions, soaking up real-world knowledge and eye-opening experiences at Dallas’ top corporations, nonprofits and professional firms.

Driven by the belief that students from Dallas’ public high schools must make the connection between a good education and a great career, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings will kick off the Mayor’s Intern Fellows program at a news conference Thursday, (March 21) at 10 a.m. in the Flag Room at Dallas City Hall.

Mayor Rawlings will deliver a call to action, asking the business community to dig deep and invest in “our youth and the future of our city” so that more high school students can take advantage of the eight-week paid summer internships. 

Mayor Rawlings will be joined by former student interns who will share what they learned from the internships. Also delivering brief remarks will be representatives from AT&T, the program’s Founding Sponsor; Bank of America, the program’s Presenting Sponsor; Education is Freedom, the nonprofit  that administers the Intern Fellows program; Dallas ISD; and Uplift Education.  Employers from various businesses also will be in attendance. 

ABOUT THE MAYOR’S INTERN FELLOWS PROGRAM.  Now in its sixth year, the Mayor’s

Intern Fellows program continues to provide high school students who attend Dallas ISD and public charter schools the opportunity to visualize their dreams and gain experiences in the real work of work.  Since its inception in 2008, 513 students have participated in internships in a variety of fields including technology, healthcare, law, accounting, business, education, the nonprofit sector, advertising/ marketing/public relations, engineering, banking, manufacturing and hospitality

The companies participating in the program range from Fortune 500 companies to local nonprofits. Companies commit to providing students a learning environment where they can increase job and communication skills, as well as spend time with executives in a mentoring capacity. In the months prior to the internship, students in the program participate in a variety of trainings concerning office etiquette, communication skills, professional dress and financial planning.
