A New Era For Texas Democrats Begins

tdp logoAustin, Texas – Last night we saw Texan Democrats take over the Capitol and halt the passage of SB5. The culmination of this special session occurred after days of sustained protest and civic engagement by Democrats who regularly flooded the Capitol and stayed into the early morning hours.

In response to these momentous and historic actions, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the follow statement:

“We have seen the future of Texas, because that future became reality this week. Against all odds, against all Republican legislative schemes and pressures, and while running against the clock, Democrats repeatedly turned up to the Capitol in droves and stayed until the early morning. A vast grassroots movement, in partnership with organizations and elected leaders, showed how we refuse to back down from a fight.

“No longer is there room for doubt about whether Texas can be competitive in 2014, or whether Democrats will step up to demand a government that truly represents their interests. As Senator Wendy Davis most powerfully emphasized, Democrats are not afraid of a fight. And when we are met with a fight, we show up in large numbers and with a fierce dedication. Last night was a turning point in that story of Texas. It is a night we will look back upon while telling the story of how Texas finally turned Back to Blue.”
