DALLAS- The winners of the JFK commemorative essay contest for eighth-graders at Kennedy-Curry Middle School were announced at a ceremony by Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings who recognized honorable mention and runner-up winners before awarding first place to Teriana Ward. Teriana read her essay and took home a $500 prize.
Superintendent Mike Miles, Trustee Lew Blackburn, Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins and Principal Dennis Taylor also participated in the ceremony.
Other essay winners included:
• Second place ($250): Jessica Faggins
• Third place ($175): Curtis Frazier
• Honorable mentions ($100 each): Kiera Powers, Victoria Houston, Makayla Lewis, Rachel Kruse, Jerrica Valentine, Darrius Hopkins and Larnarl Anderson.
The prizes were donated by the President John F. Kennedy Commemorative Foundation. A panel of essay judges included Tom Huang of The Dallas Morning News; Jeff Whittington of KERA; and Nicola Longford of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.
Students across Dallas ISD have been celebrating JFK’s legacy of service through events and activities in the past month.
