South Garland HS wins areawide spirit contest

indexWhich high school has the most spirit in North Texas? Spanish television station Univision held a contest this fall to answer that question. On Nov. 1, South Garland High School was named the 2013 En Tu Prepa winner.

“I have been in education for more than 20 years, and I have never been a part of such a tradition-rich school with so much spirit,” said new SGHS Principal Tracy Curtis. “Our students take this very seriously. There was no way they were going to let another school beat them.”

Launching its contest in October, Univision visited four high schools to capture each campus in action. South Garland’s Mariachi Estrellas, Southern Belles, marching band, football team, cheerleaders and Sentries were all featured live on the Vive La Mañana morning show Oct. 10. The station then returned to experience an SGHS pep rally Oct. 18.

After visiting the competition at Irving, Moises E. Molina and South Hills high schools, Univision enlisted its community to help choose a winner through an online poll. With more than 2,700 votes, SGHS was named this year’s champion. Curtis, along with two students and Hispanic Liaison Joe Garcia, received a commemorative megaphone live on Vive La Mañanaa Nov. 1. Univision also hosted a celebratory tailgate party for SGHS that same day.View video and pictures from the event.

“The support and love from our community is one reason we were able to generate so many votes,” commented Curtis. “Univision has a far reaching audience, and I am excited that this contest is helping us to make a name for ourselves outside the boundaries of Garland ISD. Winning the spirit contest helps to propel us toward the amazing goals we have planned for South Garland High School—to stand proudly as a model of excellence in our community.”
