Kick-Off for Trinity River Wind Festival hosted by Girl Scouts and Time Warner Cable on Saturday

Bridging Ceremony Parking MapDALLAS – Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) is hosting a Council-Wide Bridging Ceremony to kick off the Fourth Annual Trinity River Wind Festival on Saturday, May 17. The Bridging Ceremony is an opportunity for Northeast Texas Girl Scouts of all ages to walk across the newly-renovated Continental Avenue Bridge, and have the first chance of the season to partake in the latest patch activities in the Girl Scout Zone.

Time Warner Cable (TWC), the event title sponsor, will offer fun activities relating to its Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) campaign, a pledge to connect one million kids with hands-on learning opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).  TWC, as part of its CAMM initiative, will provide $25,000 in cash and in-kind support to help Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas engage and inspire girls in Dallas and surrounding communities to become interested in STEM subjects.

“Time Warner Cable is committed to inspiring students in the Dallas area and across the country to excel in their STEM studies,” said Steve Dvoskin, area vice president of operations for Time Warner Cable in North Texas.  “This partnership with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas reinforces our commitment to support organizations that are helping youth discover new and exciting STEM learning opportunities.”

In addition, Mary Kay Inc. will host activities and a photo booth to unveil its Healthy Relationships Patch aimed at teaching girls how to respect themselves and others, conduct appropriate in-person and online behavior, and take a deep dive into peer pressure and confidence building. This patch aligns with the Girl Scouts’ highly-acclaimed leadership program, It’s Your Story – Tell It! Journey, teaching girls about a strong sense of self, healthy eating and living and healthy relationships. This is the second patch launched by the GSNETX as a result of a $50,000 gift from Mary Kay to inspire the next generation of female leaders. The

Mary Kay Entrepreneurial Leadership patch, supporting young entrepreneurs and building financial literacy skills through the annual Girl Scout Cookie program, has been awarded to more than 8,000 girls since its launch last year.

More than 1,000 Girl Scouts are expected to attend the event, and will have the opportunity to earn new patches, begin their first badge in their new program grade level and partake in Girl Scout traditions.

“We are so grateful to Time Warner Cable for sponsoring this event and sharing our vision of involving young girls in STEM-related experiences,”said Jennifer Bartkowski, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. “And we thank Mary Kay for their generous donation sponsoring the latest Healthy Relationships patch, which will help us further educate girls on how to develop healthy friendships and relationships, and stand up for themselves.”

The annual Trinity River Wind Festival celebrates the beauty and spirit of the wide open spaces along the Trinity River with family-friendly events and wind-driven activities. Highlights include public kite flying, kite stunts and much more. The festival will be held at the Continental Avenue Bridge from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Bridging Ceremony starting at 10 a.m.
