Sheriff Valdez accused of dodging immigrant rights activists

immigriant rightsDALLAS — Texas Organizing Project (TOP) leaders and local immigrants rights’ allies will once again visit the office of Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez today to schedule an in-person meeting date set with Valdez, something the groups have waited months for.

“We are tired of the runaround. We want an in-person meeting with our sheriff to discuss what Dallas County plans to do to protect working immigrants like myself who do not qualify for DAPA or DACA,” said Genoveva Castellanos, a TOP community leader. “We are concerned that despite her public endorsement of DAPA and DACA, that traffic stops will continue leading to deportations of mothers and fathers, and separation of more families. We want to hear her say she is in accord with President Obama’s dissolvement of Secure Communities and that she will also prioritize keeping Dallas County families together.”

TOP and allies requested a meeting with the sheriff after November’s election, but after numerous phone calls and emails to her staff, no meeting with Valdez has been set.
