Straight Outta Compton, the musical biopic about the iconic rap group N.W.A., was a strong No. 1 at the box office for the second week in a row, according to studio estimates from Rentrak. The film pulled in $26.8 million and crossed the $100 million mark Saturday for a total of $111.5 million.

Positive word of mouth plus critical and social-media acclaim are helping Compton find a broad audience during the summer-movie doldrums of August, according to Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

“It is the movie of the moment, the movie everyone is talking about. Thank goodness for Straight Outta Compton because we definitely need that boost,” says Dergarabedian.

“Heres a film that was specifically catering toward an African-American audience, and it broke through those boundaries that first weekend and continues to do so. That’s a great story,” adds Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations.
